Professor Khapoya was born in Kenya, where he attended Catholic mission schools prior to coming to the United States to go to college. Prior to coming to Oakland, he taught at Metropolitan State College of Denver. He has also taught at the University of Nairobi in Kenya and at the Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver and has served as adjunct professor in the graduate faculty at Wayne State University. His principal research interests are in African politics and foreign policy, with special reference to South Africa and Kenya. Dr. Khapoya is married to a school psychologist. He and his wife have grown children: a son and a daughter. He has a Ph.D., Political Science from the University of Denver; an M.A., International Studies from the University of Denver ; and a B.S., Math, and B.S. Political Science, from Oregon State University.
As of January 20, 2007 he is serving as a visiting professorof political studies at the University of the Western Cape. He is teaching a seven-week seminar to final year students on African genocide in world politics, a course he has taught at Oakland in the past, with slight modifications to focus more on the United Nations and the international community rather than just the United States. It is his hope that a partnership may be forged out of this initial teaching expedition that will promote an exchange between University of the Western Cape and Oakland University.
