Dr. Maina Gatonye arrived in South Florida in 1994 to study pre-medicine and has called Miami his second home ever since. He attended St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens and graduated cum-laude at the top of his class. He then received a full scholarship to attend the prestigious Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, which is the historically black college and university (HBCU) responsible for educating over 50% of black Physicians in the United States. During medical school he received numerous national merit awards.
After graduating from medical school, he returned to Miami to pursue his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. While at U.M he conducted research on hypertension and its effects on heart failure. After completion of his training, Dr Gatonye joined Chen Medical Associates where he continues to impart his special interests as well as other Internal Medicine disciplines to his rapidly growing group of patients. He is distiguished by his patience and soothing bedside manner. Patients often rave that he is the unique blend of meticulous professionalism mixed with a caring and empathetic personality.
