McDonald Mariga Wanyama made history as the first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League on 16 March 2010. He currently plays for Inter Milan as a defensive midfielder.
He was a member of the Kamukunji High School ‘Golden Boys’, which also included Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech (Auxerre, France), who won two consecutive National Championships in 2002 and 2003. He went to Sweden in 2005 and joined Enköpings SK before signing with Helsingborgs IF in 2006. From 2008 to 2009 he played for Parma in Serie B, and was instrumental in bringing them back to Serie A for the 2009 – 2010 season.
On February 1, 2010, Mariga transferred to Inter Milan in a move that Inter president Massimo Moratti hailed as the “best thing that could have happened” to the club.
Mariga is the son of Noah Wanyama, a left winger who played for A.F.C. Leopards and the Kenya national football team. His brother, Victor Wanyama plays for Celtic in the Scottish Premiere League.
